Kandy Dalada Perahera –The Festival of Lord Buddha’s Tooth Relic, 2012
(Paper and Mixed Media)
Hand cut archival paper, wood, clear plastic paper and Corflute
Cutting a piece of paper by hand to transform it into a beautiful artwork is a challenging exercise. It is indeed the technique I selected to form my art work, Kandy Dalada Perahera.
This art work represents Sri Lanka’s most ancient religious festival which has been celebrated in ceremonial fashion every year since 4th BC showing respect to the tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The Kandy art style is among other unique cultural attributes of Sri Lanka’s last kingdom and was used to represent the Kandy Dalada(Tooth Relic) Perahera(Parade) to increase the authenticity.
Crafted area of the white archival paper is 200cm x 40cm and hand crafting was performed using craft knives and scissors.
It was my objective to regenerate the highlights of an ancient and unique culture with my own creativity.
