The Authentic Experience, 2012
(Installation and Performance)
A folkloric exhibit of a cultural practice that was in part driven by a desire for an authentic existence or experience. Despite being a historical practice, it contains elements that flatter egos and satisfy current desires for authenticity. The experience is demystified by the late appearance of a blatant and vulgar anachronism that reveals and makes transparent some of the modern objectives and results of a search for authenticity: the quest for authenticity can paradoxically lead directly to the alienation and inauthenticity it seeks to avoid.
